Windward Farms was founded as a Belgian Breeding program. Jacob H. Ruhl, and Donald E. & Janice L. Ruhl started the farm in the late 1970's and began to look for high quality stock to serve as the foundation of their herd. They stood the noted stallion, Penn State Congolaise, a son of the great Congolaise, who spent time as herd sire at Orndorff's Belgians in Waynesburg, PA.
~Below is a brief history of our farm with pictures of some of our past horses.~
In the late 80's we incorporated a Percheron breeding program into our farm. It was started with mares like the ones below.
Photos (from top): 1. Our former herd sire, Northridge Acres La Rex, a Chief's Commander son, pictured shortly before we sold him. 2. Rex being shown at the K.I.L.E.
Don passed away in June of 1997. The horses were all sold except for a team of home raised geldings who were by Rex. Although Don has been gone for over 10 years, it is his legacy of honesty and friendship that continues to influence our program here at Windward Farms.
In early 2002 we began looking for quality breeding stock to restart our breeding operation. Over the past 10 years, we have been fortunate to acquire and breed some of the best horses who have ever lived on our farm. With 30 years of breeding draft horses in our farm's history we feel fortunate to be able to look back to such a proud past and plan for an even better future. We welcome your inquiries about of top quality breeding stock and invite you to come and visit the farm to see the horses and the scenery. We are located near several landmarks in Pennsylvania Dutch Amish Country in the heart of historic Lancaster County.
